Maraming stereotyping ang nangyayari kapag ang boyfriend mo ay kano or puti or foreigner. Take note I’m talking about “boyfriend”. Because c’mon… you and I know that if you see a white girl walking down the street with a dark Filipino guy, most people would probably say: “swerte nitong mokong na ‘to…”
I have been on the receiving end of this steroeotyping and discrimination. I try not to get affected syempre, pero minsan kasi medyo lantaran. Sa mga restaurant or in public places, I get side-way glances of disapproval from fellow Pinays, who look at me head to toe, or I get smirks and bastos looks from men who also look at me from head to toe.
I don’t go out with men thinking that they could be my ticket to a better life, a richer lifestyle or that a man can “take me away” to a far away distant land where I can eat SPAM to my heart’s desire and experience a white Christmas and live like the rich and famous. And I most certainly don’t think a foreign guy could do that either.
And he’s great. He’s amazing and fun and absolutely lovely. And the great thing about him is (and maybe because he is from a land far far away with no hang-ups to worry about in this environment) that he always reminds me that it’s not everyone else in this relationship. Kaming dalawa lang ang importante. Love transcends all differences… be it language, culture, race, religion, gender, age, and so on. And it definitely transcends all kinds of negativity.
Those little looks may sting sometimes, but I go home to the man I am building my life with, nagkataon lang na green eyes, light brown hair at ‘Kano sya.
