For all graphic novel fans and closet geeks like myself, you will certainly enjoy THE LOST JOURNAL OF ALEJANDRO PARDO – Creatures & Beasts of Philippine Folklore.
I am doubly excited because this is the first time I ever immersed my self in an original Filipino literary mythic fiction. I love graphic novels… fine tawag ng iba comic books, or komiks. Pero there is something so magical about visual art and literary art coming together – and having it for yourself to own, and read, and enjoy whenever you want. Whether it’s a mutant torn between saving the world and keeping his loved ones safe, or an immortal fairytale character living among us in our dreary dimension, I JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH.
With this work by the creators, Budjette Tan, Kajo Baldisimo, David Hontiveros, Bow Guerrero and Mervin Malonzo, I am introduced spectacularly to the Filipino graphic novel scene! Palakpakan para sa mga manunulat at ilustrador!
It is more a guidebook type of fiction, detailing all the mythical creatures as sighted by Alejandro Pardo in the early 19th Century. The journal documents 36 lower mythological creatures, and an instructional chapter on “Defending Against The Dark” — kilig ako. Promise. Marami pa pa lang ibang kwento ng mga engkanto na hindi ko pa naririnig! Ang mga kwento lang sakin ni lolo dati yun kapre, manananggal, aswang, tiyanak, at dwende… may diwata din pala. SOBRANG EXCITED KOOOOOO!!!
As the Afterword of the book relays, the discovery of the lost journal was via some cryptic email from Burkina Faso — and landed in the hands of one of his supposed descendants and a colleague. The two decide to publish the journal, but after the publication, the colleague disappears. Goosebumps. I am looking forward to the story behind that story!
You can get it from your bookstores, newsstands, supermarkets and convenience stores for P295 only. And maybe bring your copy to the Summer Komikon to be held at the Bayanihan Center in Pasig — just in case one of the creators is there. 😉
P.S. Bukod sa nakakatakot yet very interesting book, may nadiscover kaming nakakatakot but not very interesting… Ang hintuturo ni Ms. Domesticated.
